MahaNakhon: Bangkok’s Tallest Yet Strangest Skyscraper
Bangkok, the capital city of Thailand, is one of the most interesting modern cities in the world. To make it even more interesting, the city has added to its skyline a unique skyscraper called the MahaNakhon, or the Pixel Tower.
Officially opened recently to a great fanfare and to an almighty light show celebration, the tower is Thailand’s tallest building at 314 meters. It has become an instant landmark on Bangkok’s skyline not only because it’s super-tall, but also because it has a strange feature that has baffled locals and the world at large in equal measures.
The 77-storey building is certainly spectacular and quite a sight to behold, especially because it looks unfinished yet. On the contrary, that’s just its aesthetic feature. This rather unusual tower is the work of Ole Scheeren, a German architect who was not at all shy in giving the tower an extraordinary jagged look that makes it all strange.
“If you look at my buildings designs, they’re all different. Most of them are inspired by different situations and therefore require very different answers. As for MahaNakhon, it’s based on a vision of a tower that’s very much about process and progress. To some extent, it looks incomplete or unfinished,” Scheeren said.
So should you find yourself in Thailand, consider paying this architectural marvel a visit.
