This dog who saved lives in the recent tragedy in Ecuador passes away.
The catastrophic earthquake that hit Ecuador last week has claimed more than 654 lives and leaves 12,000 others with devastating injuries has found and unlikely hero by the name Dayko. Sadly, the heroic rescue dog passed away after saving seven lives trapped beneath the rubbles as he supported firefighters searching for survivors of the 7.8 magnitude earthquake.
The dog put his life in line and worked to exhaustion, which resulted in him suffering a heart attack in his search for survivors. The four-year-old Labrador was a member of Fire Department of Ibarra and had been a member of the unit since birth. The firefighters from the department paid a touching tribute to their fallen canine colleague in a Facebook post, noting and thanking him for giving his life for a better cause and for dying in the line of duty.
“We’re today mourning the life of Dayko who passed away while participating in the work of search in Pedernales. This friend of four legs gave his life in the line of duty and we thank him for his heroic efforts in Pedernales and in other emergencies to which he participated,” read part of the tribute posted in Spanish by the Ibarra Fire Department.
Dayko, who passed away in the early hours of Friday morning, had both national and international certifications and was so vital in saving lives in the aftermath of one of the worst earthquakes ever experienced in Ecuador.
