Rumors are flying that there could be up to three brand new Star Wars games coming!
Though it seems as if the Star Wars craze is well upon us, the scarcity of new Star Wars games that have come out to coincide with last year’s feature film reboot have been a bit disappointing. While Star Wars Battlefront EA was obviously a commercial success by all accounts, and will likely continue to be a major money rig for EA, there are more than a few rumors out there that some very exciting Star Wars franchises will be launching sooner rather than later.
In fact, in a recent earnings call hosted by EA CEO, Blake Jorgensen, he released candid details on some new Star Wars games currently in development. For starters, EA’s plan is to generally release one new Star Wars game every year over the next three to four years. While that doesn’t give much detail as to what games those will be (Battlefront is expected to get a timely sequel with more updated levels based on the new movies) there are plenty of whisperings about new franchises launching.
The idea is that after Battlefront 2 comes out, the window will be open for the new Star Wars project which has recently been taken over by developer Visceral, the same developer that was behind the hugely popular Dead Space series. It could be a safe bet then to say the game will be a third person game, and whether that follows in the vein of an open world RPG akin to Knights of the Old Republic or your more conventional movie-licensed action adventure title is hard to say. It could be a bit of both, considering the team recently hired on Amy Hennig, revered for her work on the Uncharted franchise.
Titanfall Studio is also working on their own Star Wars game, which will include Stig Asmussen, who was formerly the lead designer on God of War 3. Indeed, that project appears to be a third person action game as well, considering Asmussen’s candid comments about the game on his blog:
“We’ll be making a third-person action/adventure game set in the Star Wars universe. Now, I understand on the surface this might sound a bit dry, but developing a game within the ever-expanding Star Wars universe opens up so many paths for us to go down, and an unparalleled playground to design within. We have already planted the seeds by assembling a small, but incredibly talented team, ready for the amazing journey that lies ahead. With this in mind we are looking to expand the dream.”
Other rumors insist one of these aforementioned projects will be a Han Solo-centered adventure. The prospect of a rumored RTS title getting released has also been getting fans excited. A secret trailer for the game was recently leaked onto Vimeo by a former audio designer for the project. Of course, the video was promptly swiped off with copyright claims, but it’s another exciting development, considering the project was long thought to be cancelled, and may very well still be.
And of course, on June 28th, the new LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens will be made available. While this may not be very exciting news to everyone, the new trailer you can watch has some humorous moments and plenty of dialogue for a LEGO game. Still, it’s a bit head scratching that Star Wars fans will have just a LEGO game, five months late at that, to play through the summer. Perhaps the license is going more for quality over quantity this time around.
