The Masterful Art of Trompe L’Oeil
What if you came back home from a trip and knew that you were in the right place, but things just didn’t seem right? Well, that’s exactly what some residents of a neighborhood in France felt when their buildings were the canvas for talented French artist Patrick Commency.
Being a master in the art of the tompe-l’oeil technique, Commency realized that walls of certain buildings in French towns looked pretty dull. So he decided to use his skill to transform these uninspiring buildings into amazingly cool and beautiful opposites of their former selves and altered the entire area.
Although the huge paintings are not real, Commency places them in such a way that they look like the genuine article, hence rendering the locations and streets nearly unrecognizable. Each building is designed in a well-thought out manner that perfectly evokes the spirit from each location.
In essence, Commency’s hyper-realistic murals could increase the value of the buildings, but only if they were real.
