At this point, you might be wondering what the heck is cosplay. But before going into that, let’s give credit where it’s due by pointing out that Joanie Brosas has been crowned the new queen of cosplay. Apart from being gorgeously beautiful, Miss Brosas describe herself on Facebook as a model, a major bookworm, a nerd girl next door, a computer geek and a real-life cheat code. Did she fully deserve the crown? Probably, yes.
While cosplay may not be a familiar term to the mainstream, it is a term that has been in use for the past three decades. It was a term that was coined by Japanese native, Nobuyuki Takahashi way back in 1984. He was attending the World Science Fiction Convention in Los Angeles and is said to have been so impressed by the costumed fans and the hall. It was after his report on Japanese magazine, ‘My Anime’ that the word ‘cosplay’ came to be as a contraction of the words ‘costume’ and ‘play’.
With its roots in Japan, cosplay has grown to become a worldwide convention where participants dress up and pretend to be a fictional character from a movie, a book, a video game or just as a manga (comics created in Japan) or an anime (Japanese computer or hand-drawn) character. While there have been more than 1,000 girls who have participated in cosplay, only a few of them have been named the best before.
Depending on what the judges were looking for (which is obviously up for debate) few can refute the fact that Miss Brosas fully deserved the crown this time round. Looking at her photos from the contest, she appears to be putting half the costume most of the time. Nonetheless, everybody seems to love the tiny clothes, which perfectly goes with her amazing body.
As a self-proclaimed true nerd at heart, Miss Brosas has been cosplaying for four years. She is a game lover, loves comic books and has been featured on the cover of various internationally acclaimed magazines such as Men’s Magazine and Calendars, as well as having modeled at a Star Trek convention. In her own words;
“I’m a wonderfully approachable and a down to earth girl who loves to meet new friends.”
