Boxing, kung-fu, karate and fencing among skills used in scenes.
The movie Deadpool has become something of an unstoppable machine on the theatres. It is rated as the highest-grossing R-rated movie premiere of all time having garnered more than $235 million in the first 10 days at the US box office. This is actually not surprising if you take into account the fact that the movie’s amazing fight stunts were designed by top Hollywood stunt and fight coordinator, Phillip J. Silvera.
In an exclusive behind-the-scene video that was released via Rolling Stone, Silvera shows how he designed the movie’s crazy fight scenes. Silvera, who has in the past worked on major projects such as Iron Man 3, Daredevil and Star Wars: The Old Republic, starts the fantastic fight scenes by drawing from a range of combat skills including boxing, kung-fu, karate, fencing and Wushu. The combination of all these skills is used to come up with the famed AJAX (Ed Skrein) combat scene that is witnessed towards the end of the movie.
Silvera also shows how the Angel Dust (Gina Carano) and Colossus (Andre Tricoteux) fight scene was created. He combined motion capture and double stunt works that culminates to Carano miming the entire scene on her own.
Talking about the idea behind these designs, Silvera said:
“In designing the stunts and the movie in general, we had to tell the story. We didn’t want to find ourselves doing normal punching and kicking scenes for no reason, or car hits and wire gags only because they’re considered cool. Every scene should tell a story.”
